What You Need to Know to Start Your Own Home Based T-Shirt Printing Business
Are you thinking about beginning your own screen printing company? It costs almost nothing to start a t-shirt printing company at home. I have read about a number of different people get a printing company started for very little money, but one guy in particular will be used as an example. He made the frames with used lumber, and used cloth from an old wedding dress for the screens. He printed and sold signs. He also printed magnets, shirts, and sports caps. Eventually, he designed and built his own four colored printing press.
You could start your own screen printing business and it wouldn’t be to hard or pricey. It would cost under $100 to purchase the equipment to screen print t-shirts. You could start out with these few materials: a frame, photo emulsion, a cheap light, ink, a squeegee, masking tape and shirts. For another hundred , you could obtain a single shirt screen printing press. You could even opt to build your own press.
The nice thing about starting off this way is that you can upgrade your gear as your company grows. It only costs a couple of cents worth of ink to print each shirt. You can get blank shirts on sale at Michaels for $3-4 each, or you can buy them in quantity for less. You can purchase box lots of t-shirts on eBay. You can easily run your business out of your garage, basement or a spare room in your home.
One thing that you could do would be to design and print shirts to sell on eBay. The first thing I would do if this were my plan would be to go to eBay and see what style of shirts people are buying and selling. Are they buying and selling shirt of dogs, cats, silly slogans, etc.? Begin by developing your own original artwork, then print some shirts and list them on eBay. So you might pay a couple bucks per shirt, it only costs pennies to print them, and then you might be able to sell them on eBay for $10-$15 on eBay.
Some other opportunities for your screen printing company include local rock bands, sports teams and family reunions. If you find out that somebody needs shirts printed, make sure to offer your services for a little profit. Remember that it’s important that you do a good quality job. More than likely, after you have done a couple jobs, you will begin getting business referrals by word of mouth. Another idea to drive business would be to get business cards printed up and posting them on local bulletin boards to advertise your custom printed shirts.
